Doris Nell Jones, age 91, of Onalaska, Texas, passed away peacefully from this life on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Nell was born November 25, 1930, in Prentiss, Mississippi, to Stanley & Maggie Loftin. She was the 3rd child of the Loftin family.
She was raised in Prentiss, Mississippi, on the family farm that was originally owned by her great granddad, McNease. She graduated from Jefferson Davis County High School in Prentiss. At 21, she eloped and married J.C. “Joe” Jones. They were married for 48 years and together had 7 children. They moved to Houston, Texas in 1960 where they lived and raised their family. Nell was a stay-at-home mom until 1982 when she began working at Lakewood Cleaners in North Houston. She worked there until moving to Onalaska in 1996. After the death of her first husband, Joe, in 2000, she became active with the senior citizens group in Onalaska. It is here that she met and fell in love with Arthur, whom she married in 2004. Since Arthur’s death last year, Nell has done some travelling with her oldest daughter, Gloria. In September, they were able to take a bus tour to see the Ark in Ohio. They travelled to Florida to spend Thanksgiving with her baby sister, Maxine, and had the chance to meet her great-granddaughter, Elena. Then in May, they travelled with Kennith to Mississippi to meet her great-grandkids, Tyler and Taylor and great-great-granddaughter, Kennedy. She was looking forward to taking a trip to Washington, D.C., but wasn’t able to go. Now she’s finished her race and travelled to her final destination – Heaven!
Nell loved sitting on the porch, working in the yard, playing puzzles on the computer, looking at pictures of her grandbabies on Facebook and having a pretzel and root beer from Sonic! But most of all she loved Jesus and devoted her life to Him. You couldn’t talk to her for very long without finding out this fact. She talked about Him to anyone who would listen. Even during her last days, when she was confused, she was still praising Him.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, J.C, and second husband, Arthur; her dad, mom, brother, Knox, and sister, Thelma; 6 of her children, Alvin, Doris, David (son-in-law), Edward, Lorrie (daughter-in-law) and Bobby Lynn; and 1 grandson, Donald. She will be deeply missed by her children, Gloria Jean Courtney, Orrin Kennith Jones, Geni Sheffield (daughter-in-law), Lisa McCartney Jones (daughter-in-Law) and Cindy Jo Melton and husband, Jay Melton. Grandchildren – Kevin Jones, Danielle Smith, Hannah Melton Reese and Bethany Melton. Great-Grandchildren – Torrie, Dylan, Destiny, Evan, Katie Lauren, Torrin, Tyler, Taylor Anne and Elena. And one Great-Great-Grandchild - Kennedy; sister, Maxine, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
